Questions: Here is a question from one of my readers:
Q: Can you expound on Mark:16:17 Thou shall speak with New Tongues.
A: Yes, Jesus is telling the disciples what to expect when the out pouring of the Holy Spirit comes on them. They will be immersed (drenched) in the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit and will speak in foreign languages they had never learned before. Foreigners from other countries will hear them speaking in the language of their own country.
Q: Does 'Speaking in tongues'fit into that?
A: You are asking some really great questions. I think the answer is yes and no. I think yes because when the baptism in the Holy Spirit came upon the people they saw tongues of fire and spoke in tongues of other people’s languages for the hearers benefit.
The reason there is a no answer is because after the event on the Day of Pentecost the Bible does not mention tongues as earthly languages. After that day people were saved, baptized in water and then baptized in the Holy Ghost. They then spoke in a heavenly language that could not be understood by earthly men. This type of tongues is what I believe to be what is known as praying in the spirit. Praying in the spirit is our spirit praying and not our intellectual mind praying. When we pray in the spirit we are praying under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is helping us pray spiritually because we do not know to pray as we should.
25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Notice when we pray as the Spirit give us utterance we are praying according to the will of God. When we pray according to the will of God supernatural miracles will happen in the lives of those we pray for (intercession for the saints) and our own needs according to God's will. God is our source and our provider.
By praying the spirit the Holy Spirit helps our mouth pray in this heavenly language. He flows from our inner body area known as the lower belly which is sometimes called the heart. He flows up through our body and out of our mouth rivers of living water. Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”. When you are full of the Holy Spirit He pours out of you the heavenly language. All you have to do is yield your tongue to Him and He does the praying through your tongue. You do not need to be concerned with how you sound when you pray in the Spirit because this language is not an earthly language that people can understand.
There is also gifts of the Spirit in another kind of tongues. This kind of tongues is the gift of tongues that can only be said in a situation where there is one that has the gift of interpretation. The gift of tongues is not something one can do whenever you feel like it whereas praying in the Spirit can be done at will.
We will look into the gifts of the Spirit if anyone has a question on this subject.
