You Who Are Given to Pleasures

One thing that I do in my daily scripture study is look for key words and phrases that repeat themselves, i.e., one of the phrases I noticed repeated often in the Bible is "in his heart" 144 times and "his heart" 237 times.  I felt impressed in my spirit that the Lord has key words and phrases strategically placed for me to find.  I enjoy reading the word everyday because I find that the Lord speaks to me though His word.  He shows me what He wants me to learn everyday.

As I was reading Isaiah 47 yesterday I noticed some other key phrases that just seem to jump off the page, i.e., Isaiah 47:8 " . . . you who are given to pleasures . . ."  This prophecy was written to Babylon, it is also a statement to those who seek to please themselves through over indulgence through worldly pleasures, i.e., sex, drugs, and rock and roll, as the saying goes.  Obsession with pleasures is a form of idolatry, which is an abomination to the Lord.

This verse also includes the words, " . . . I Am . . . " which is saying I Am a god.  The Lord God is the only one that has the right and authority to say this phrase.  When man uses it he is saying that I Am a little god.  These men do not believe they need the true God because they think they are a god or better than God.  This is what Satan, alias Lucifer, thought to himself as he sinned against God.  Satan enjoys tricking man into taking his thoughts and causing man to sin against the Lord just as he did.

" . . . you have trusted in your wickedness . . . " Isaiah 47:10.  The wicked, those who have rejected God, have deceived themselves because of their own " . . . wisdom, knowledge . . ." and craftiness.  They think so much of themselves they believe they must be a god.  The think to themselves, " . . . no one sees me . . .", because they deny the existence of an all knowing God.  They have said, " . . . in their hearts, I am, and there is no one else besides me."

Evil will come upon those who practice "sorceries . . . and enchantments" (witchcraft) , and you will not know where it comes". Isaiah 47:11,12

Most people think idolatry is the worship of carved or moulded images.  Anything that man bows to and worships, other than the Lord, is idolatry.  Here are a few examples of idolatry:
  • Anyone or anything that is more important to you than the Lord
  • Trust in technology and little or no regard for the one that provides for all your needs.
  • Trust the government to provided for all your needs.
  • Trust in human ingenuity
  • Trust in medical doctors more than the creator.
  • Trust in the S.A.D. (Standard American Diet).  Almost ten years ago I lost 20 lbs. by eating mostly tomatoes.  My doctor, at the time, thought it would be a good idea for me to go to a dietitian to make sure I was on a healthy diet.  I was so proud as I brought in my food counter by "Spark People" with me to my dietitian appointment.  I thought she would be impressed because my Spark People program listed the calories, fat, and carbohydrates I had eaten for the past thirty days.  I was proud of the fact that I was losing weight by keeping my carbs at 120 or less.  She hit the roof and stated I was killing myself by not eating enough carbs per day.  I made the mistake of listening to her and increased my carb intake and guess what?  I gained the weight back!  I fired my doctor and my dietitian.
  • Trust in medications rather than the help of the creator.
  • Appetite: " . . . And put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite." Proverbs 23:2  We most often think of food in relationship to appetite and food is pleasure that can become an obsession.  I think one can have an appetite or cravings for other things, i.e., sex, porn etc.  These appetites or obsessive cravings are caused by demonic influences through oppression.
  • Occult Practices: Ouija boards, tarot cards, crystal balls, astrology, horoscopes, sorceries, enchantments, witchcraft, astrology (stargazers) and prognosticators
  • Drugs - this term is usually thought of  anything that can cause one to be addicted, i.e., pain killers prescribed by medical doctors, recreational drugs, and illicit drugs.
In Galatians 5:19-21 we find the word interpreted as "sorcery" in some translations and "witchcraft" in others.   These verses list seventeen things that would cause a person not to inherit the kingdom of God except the word "sorcery" should have been interpreted "drugs".

These interpretations are from the Greek word Pharmakia.  Proper interpretation of this word today would be drugs.

A relationship with our Lord Jesus is the only one that give us peace and happiness.  If you need prayer please let me know and I will be happy to pray with you In Jesus Name.  Jesus is our healer, He is our source of all things.  Amen
